Feminism and Controversial Dialogue: WLRN Call for Respectful Engagement

MADISON – December 10, 2025. At the FiLiA conference in Brighton, UK this past October, clashes between feminist advocates for Palestine and those in support of Israel were prominent. But this statement is not about Israel and Palestine, it is about how we as feminists communicate with each other.

We are aware that disagreement with others can be quickly labeled as hatred with the intent to shut down and silence the speaker or author. We know this from our experiences defending ourselves against trans activists. We wish to practice respectful dialogue around controversial issues and break free from the patterns of communication perpetuated under male rule.

We reject the idea that any group—anywhere, ever—must be placed beyond criticism.

We invite the women who are in disagreement with our guest author’s piece to engage substantively with the content. All guest pieces are considered for publication at WLRN.

We, the women of WLRN, encourage women to criticize male domination in all its forms.

Women’s Liberation Radio News is an independent media group created by volunteers to break the sound barrier women are blocked by under the status quo rule of men. We publish and air a variety of opinions in order to ensure that women have a place where their thoughts and analysis of male supremacy can be expressed.

Some of our members offered our views about the FiLia conference in our regular monthly podcast released in November here: https://wlrnmedia.com/2025/11/06/edition-115-wlrn-digest-of-filia-2025/

We hope that WLRN can continue to offer women a space to disagree and grapple with the tough issues of the day.

Margaret created an image she wanted to share to illustrate issues around women’s communication.

Artist’s statement:

My image is meant to recall 2 women arguing or one woman arguing inside her own head (‘after’ Picasso’s ‘Head of Woman’). I layered that over the top of a satellite image (without borders) of Israel / Palestine. Those familiar with these lands might notice that I used the Dead Sea for the mouth (suggesting Munch’s ‘Scream’) which has a red X over the top because while some women (usually those women who side with Palestine) desperately want to talk about what is happening in Gaza, others desperately would silence talk about what Israel is doing, or at least silence talk that casts shade on the identity of their group. I put an image of a spider’s web over it all – to show how connected we are (whether we like it or not). We are all a part of the web of life.
