I am a straight woman in my early 30’s, who as a teenager read SO much fan fiction, in particular “yaoi” which is male on male sexy fiction. I often wondered to myself why I enjoyed this so much, something about the male vulnerability piqued my interest. I found this extremely embarrassing and a red flag that I was enjoying it, I thought I was messed up in my head. I have not admitted this to anyone – but I can see how a teenage girl today could find herself questioning her gender by discovering her taste for male on male porn… one google would place her in gender dysphoria “support” groups to indoctrinate her into believing she is really a gay man.
I have not seen the Chalamet film (sounds like I should watch it though?!) but for me the fantasy was much about forbidden love (in the sense that a het man would not allow himself to be attracted to another man, the fantasy was overcoming that), or being the one man that a strong het man felt comfortable enough to be ‘feminine and vulnerable’ with. I find it hard to pinpoint the exact reason I enjoy these fantasies, so this discussion was interesting. Would love to hear more. Lesbian porn is a huge fantasy for men, so why not the other way too?
I think it’s worth investigating fanfiction forums alongside porn websites, because the same thing is happening there just less visually, you can see the amount of HarryXMalfoy sex stories, 99% of them are written by teenage women. It’s a phenomenon alright. My generation and those coming after it have been raised in a fantasy land littered with unrealistic porn, while the adults heads were in the sand. We cannot cope in the real world.
