Braving the Cold for Women’s Rights

MILWAUKEE, February 7, 2021 — Five Wisconsin women gathered in downtown Milwaukee yesterday for a photo shoot in front of a billboard WLRN sponsored to educate citizens about the federal Equality Act, a piece of legislation that could be introduced to Congress as soon as February 22.

GoFundMe removed the women’s fundraiser for this local billboard and TV ad due to “prohibited content.” However, the company would not specify what content, in particular, was prohibited.

The billboard, which pictures a man racing against female athletes, went up in downtown Milwaukee on Thursday at Greenfield, just east of 16th Street. It is unclear what specific content was prohibited, and so far GoFundMe has not specified when asked.

Miriam Ben-Shalom, co-organizer of the campaign stated, “We did not violate any of GoFundMe rules in our campaign. We were very respectful in stating our intended purpose, which was to comment on pending federal legislation and its impacts on women and girls. It appears that GoFundMe simply wishes to censor feminists.”

The activists wish to spread awareness about how they believe the Equality Act will harm women.

According to another campaign organizer, “The Equality Act, as currently written, will damage women’s civil rights at the federal level, including women’s right to sports under Title IX. Our campaign forces the public to examine whether or not they truly think this is fair.”

Filming of the TV ad is currently delayed due to weather, however, it should be up and running on WKOW Channel 27 by the end of next week.
